A geneticist is a medical doctor that helps those with cancer, those suspected to be carriers of genetic mutations, and other extended family members explore their concerns about cancer risks. The geneticist discusses psychological implications for families learning about DNA gene testing and provides treating physicians with important information that may affect treatment plans. People with a family history of cancer are often concerned about their own risk for cancer, as well as for their children and grandchildren. The Hereditary Cancer Program (HCP) of the Division of Human Genetics at the UConn Health Center was established in 1992 to provide timely, accurate information and cancer risk assessment for individuals with a personal and . family history of cancer.
