A pathologist is a medical doctor with specialty training in the microscopic diagnosis of disease. When a biopsy is performed, a pathologist is responsible for examining the breast tissue and determining if any abnormalities are present. The pathologist works in the laboratory and in the operating room in a special laboratory performing "frozen section" consultations for the surgeons during operations. Hartford Pathology Associates is a professional group of M.D.'s and Ph.D.s who constitute the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine for the Partnership for Breast Care, Hartford Hospital and the Children's Hospital Medical Center. The anatomic pathologists listed below are the diagnostic experts who read the results from tissue biopsies that your surgeon or radiologist may take to investigate a suspicious lump or a mammographic abnormality. Other pathologists with specialty training in various disciplines such as immunohistochemistry and molecular pathology support the work of the diagnosticians and provide specialized testing of tumor tissues. There are 11 board certified anatomic pathologists who are responsible for making breast diagnoses.
